A stranger poking around in your mouth is uncomfortable for anyone, but it can be particularly overwhelming to a child with autism. There are a lot of potential unknowns, especially if your child is a new patient. However, with a little careful preparation and planning, you can relieve some of the anxiety that comes with the dentist’s office. Here are 5 tips on making your child with autism comfortable at the dentist.

#1. Prevent and Practice: Oral Hygiene Routine

It can be hard for someone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to engage in a healthy dental hygiene routine. Many people with ASD have sensory sensitivities that might make it harder to brush and floss thoroughly.

Dentists recommend establishing a healthy oral hygiene regimen at a young age, beginning brushing as soon as the first tooth comes in. This way, you can help your child feel comfortable with different products and hygiene steps.

Through lots of trial and error, you will likely find certain flavors or textures they prefer as well as the perfect toothbrush and toothpaste combination for them. This is all valuable information to share with their dentist. In fact, their dental team may even recommend bringing in their preferred oral hygiene products so there is some added familiarity.

#2. Find a Pediatric Dentist Experienced with Special Needs Dentistry

Not every pediatric dentist will be experienced in providing treatment for children with autism. Doing some research ahead of time, whether scanning the practice’s website for this information or calling ahead to learn about your dentist’s experience, can ensure your child will receive quality care.

Finding a dentist who is patient and understanding of your child’s specific accommodations can help lessen dental anxiety and foster a healthy relationship with oral hygiene.

#3. Call Before Your Visit

Calling ahead with questions for your child’s dentist can help reduce the number of unknowns they face at their appointment. Ask if you and your child can tour the office beforehand or if you can be in the room with them during their visit. It can also be helpful to learn more about the types of dental sedation the practice offers in case your child has trouble staying calm.

#4. Show Your Child the Ropes Beforehand

Simulate your child’s dental appointment ahead of time. You can act out the visit together and interactively teach them the ins and outs of a trip to the dentist. Alternatively, you can show videos or read books about going to the dentist so they will be more familiar with the process for their own appointment.

#5. Bring in Comfort Items

Packing a go-bag with some of your child’s favorite items can offer them comfort in an unfamiliar place. Whether that means you bring an iPad so they can watch their favorite TV shows or their favorite blanket or toy, some reminders of home can keep your child calm throughout their visit.
