As a parent in today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to make healthy eating decisions rather than choices of convenience. It’s so easy to grab packaged food on the go! Childhood obesity isn’t the only problem parents need to be worried about when considering their children’s eating habits, however. The foods they consume also greatly impact your child’s oral health. Continue reading if you’re interested in nutritious snack ideas for your youngster!
Some Unhealthy Favorites
Sugary foods and beverages can be bad for our teeth because the sugar attracts harmful, cavity-causing bacteria. That means that limiting their consumption helps us keep our teeth and gums in tip-top shape. Many packaged foods that are popular go-to choices for children have high sugar content, however. To ensure your child doesn’t develop cavities, try to avoid too many:
- Fruit snacks
- Cookies
- Candies
- Fruit juices
- Energy/sports drinks
- Sodas
While it’s fine to enjoy these occasionally, you might try stocking your pantry with other selections instead!
The Unfortunate Truth About Starch
Did you know that starchy carbohydrates also can be harmful to your child’s teeth? Starches like cereal, crackers, and bread quickly turn to sugar once we eat them. Not only that, but they tend to be dry and so can easily get stuck on teeth. This can lead to plaque or tartar growth which has the potential to escalate into more serious issues down the road. The longer these germs stay in your child’s mouth, the more likely they are to cause damage.
What Are Better Choices?
Thankfully, there are plenty of options for healthier snacks to enjoy! Next time your little loved one is hungry and demanding something to eat, try one of these alternatives, instead:
- Cheese
- Yogurt (pick one that is not high in sugar!)
- Fresh fruit
- Air-popped popcorn
- Celery (with or without peanut butter)
- Nuts
- Oatmeal
- Smoothie (made of fresh fruits and vegetables)
- Hard-boiled egg
- Carrot sticks
These are some examples, but the sky’s the limit! It can be fun to attempt new recipes, or experiment to come up with some of your own! If it’s feasible, you may even want to take your son or daughter grocery shopping with you so they can help pick out some more wholesome treats.
Though it may take a few more minutes of preparation, providing healthier substitutes will pay off as your child learns beneficial eating habits that will last a lifetime!
