Halloween was only one month ago, which means your kid is probably still chipping away at their Trick-or-Treat earnings. You don’t want to add to their already dragon-like hoard of sugary snacks, but what else are you going to stuff in their Christmas stockings if not seasonal candy?
Fortunately for concerned caretakers everywhere, there are treats both tasty and non-edible that are safer for your kiddo’s smile! Keep reading for some dentist-approved stocking stuffers that won’t give them cavities.
Smile-Friendly Treats
The two main qualities you have to watch out for in snack food are acidity and sugar content. Acidic delights can wear down natural enamel, making teeth more vulnerable to oral conditions – like cavities. Sugar, meanwhile, accelerates bacterial growth, which makes it harder to control the strains that cause cavities. Instead of candy canes or toffee, try these healthier alternatives:
- Yogurt covered raisons
- Tasty nuts
- Sugar-free gum
- Dark chocolate
- Your child’s favorite type of cheese
You might be surprised to find gum and dark chocolate on the list. Gum, when sugar-free, actually helps keep teeth clean by stimulating saliva production, and dark chocolate contains polyphenols and antioxidants that help combat bacteria. These two treats in particular will make your kid happy and promote their oral health!
Not Edible, but Still Fun
Not all stocking stuffers have to be edible. If you’d rather find something more unique to gift your child, think along the lines of games, hobbies, and other forms of entertainment – as well as fun ways to encourage dreaded brushing and flossing. For example:
- Books are always great presents for avid readers and learners.
- Character-themed toothbrushes make oral hygiene exciting.
- Flavored mouthwash or toothpaste are good choices for kids that don’t like mint.
- Art supplies, like colored pencils or paint brushes support creative activity.
- Card games are a great way to pass the time with siblings and friends. Some packs also have fun designs that might interest your child more than the classic look.
For kids, Christmas is supposed to be a fun and exciting time. That enjoyment would get cut short if they developed cavities from eating too much candy! That said, sugary and acidic treats are okay to have on occasion. If you can’t resist giving your child their favorite, non-dental friendly snack, just make sure to moderate how often and how much they eat. Otherwise, feel free to make use of these alternative suggestions.
