When you are a parent, there are all sorts of uncertainties. It can be challenging to know when your child’s first baby teeth will come in and fall out. After all, every child is different. These milestones are exciting for both children and parents. Continue reading to learn more about the baby teeth, when they will erupt, and when you can expect them to come out.
Why Do Baby Teeth Erupt?
Children usually develop twenty baby teeth, also called primary teeth. There is a lot of variability in when a child’s first tooth erupts. However, the first teeth usually appear around the age of six months. Most of the time, the first teeth to come in are the lower front teeth, also called the lower central incisors. When your child’s first tooth erupts, this is the perfect time to schedule their first dental visit. Most kids will have all of their primary teeth by the time they are three years old.
How to Keep Baby Teeth Healthy
When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, keeping up a good oral hygiene routine is key! Help your child brush their teeth twice per day and floss regularly. They should also see their dentist every six months for routine cleanings and checkups. This way, their dentist can continue to monitor their smile’s development and keep an eye out for oral health issues, including cavities and gingivitis. If you have any questions regarding at-home care, this is the perfect time to ask.
When Do Baby Teeth Fall Out?
Typically, baby teeth begin to loosen and fall out around the time children go to elementary school full-time – around kindergarten or 1st grade. Most of the time, baby teeth fall out in the same order that they come in as the roots of the baby teeth dissolve. Primary teeth most commonly fall out between the ages of 6 to 13, but each child is different. If their teeth are coming out earlier or later than other kids, this isn’t something to be concerned about. If you have any worries, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s dentist.
Tooth development is an exciting part of your child growing up. When your child’s teeth come in and fall out can vary for each individual. By bringing your little one to regular dental visits, they can monitor their growth so you child can show off a healthy, happy smile!
